Employers sometimes take deductions from a worker’s wages as a form of punishment, or as some sort of performance management tool.
For example, if you make a mistake, or accidentally break something at work, and then your boss takes that money out of your wages.
Or when your employer deducts money from your wages to make up till balances at the end of a day’s trade.
Another example is when your employer forces you to stay on-site in accommodation that they own, and then charge you exorbitant rent which they take out of your wages.
Deductions from your wages are unlawful unless they are authorised by you as the employee, and they must benefit you as an employee.
For example, salary sacrificing to purchase a laptop computer.
